To go to Tucupita (3 hours), from Puerto Ordaz go to San Felix, cross the Orinoco River: It takes 20 minutes the journey, but the wait can be one hour or more, or take the new Puerto Ordaz bridge which prevents you from waiting but extending the journey a bit. Then go to Barrancas, on the way, you cross the pine plantations of Uverito. On the other side of Maturin you will have to travel 122 km on the road and continue by river. Founded in the last century by the Capuchin monks to evangelize the Waraos Indians, the town of Tucupita borders the Orinoco, or rather two of the arms of the 2nd largest South American river (behind the Amazon): the Río río (meaning "two" in warao) and the Río Grande (by which cargo flows). It is in this respect that Tucupita is interested in us, because it is from here that we have excursions in the delta. For the rest, there is no interest in staying here. The main town of the Delta, the capital of the Delta Amacuro state, is inhabited by 30 000 souls. As for the crocodiles formerly insect the Orinoco, the time of first explorations, let us reassure you: The only specimens are caïmans, which do not attack the man.Beware! A (small) malaria risk exists here: anti-malarial treatment is worth considering. Refer to the Health chapter. But in all cases, don't forget the antimoustiques! Attention also to water: Buckling buckling and curled bellies are typical signs of parasites or worms.
