Founded in Etruscan times, the city became a flourishing Roman municipality, and during the Middle Ages it was under the rule of the Vitelli family, who embellished it with splendid palaces and works of art. It experienced periods of independence and domination. It was not until the 16th century, with Cesare Borgia, that it came under the domination of the Papal States, and this (with the exception of the Napoleonic period) until the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860. Its influence never went beyond the local area. Worth seeing: its art gallery with masterpieces by Raffaello, Luca Signorelli, Ghirlandaio, Raffaellino del Colle and Pomarancio.
