Mausoleum in Greek cross built between 425 and 450 by the empress Galla Placidia.

The mausoleum was built between 425 and 450 by Empress Galla Placidia, daughter of Theodosius I. It is a Greek cross-shaped building whose bare exterior and very modest dimensions contrast with the splendour of the interior decoration. The oldest mosaics in Ravenna can be admired here. The barrel vaults of the four arms are decorated with floral motifs, while the central dome has a starry sky. Several saints, and a Good Shepherd above the entrance.

Fascinating blue and alabaster
Go deeply on the blue sky full of gloden stars of this small but intense masterpiece. Enjoy the beautiful transparency of alabaster windows. Look at the poor laurence ready to go on the grill amazingly represented with a realistic orange fire.

L'extérieur de ce mausolée est mignon, mais l'intérieur est impressionant ! Les mosaïques bleus et dorés offrent un endroit paisible et majestueux, très adapté pour le repos. Le peu de lumière qui rentre de l'extérieur reinforce ces caractéristiques de cet endroit. Un immanquable de la ville de Ravenne.
