Gällivare is still a vibrant center of Saami culture. With the discovery of iron and copper reserves at the end of the 19th century, the population grew from 147 to almost 10,000 in ten years. Just 100 km north of the Arctic Circle, Gällivare doesn't really have any special attractions. Its main attractions are the nearby nature reserves of Mount Dundret, Muddus Park and Stora Sjöfallet, all accessible by bus. Closer to the center, you can take a guided tour of the two mines, hit the ski slopes in winter or visit the town museum. Just outside town is the Drundret hill (800 m). A 6 km round-trip hike from the parking lot towards Fjällstugan Dundret along easy paths leads to the summit hut, with its panoramic views over Gällivare and the surrounding area.
