The area has been inhabited by the Saami for thousands of years, but the first permanent residents settled in Nikkaluokta around 1910. They were reindeer herding families(njargajohttit) who lost their herds during a difficult winter period and were looking for alternative livelihoods. Nikkaluokta was on the migration route and was therefore a good place to settle. The place offered the new inhabitants the possibility to hunt and fish, as well as the opportunity to work in developing sectors, such as transportation.
