Narvik is an old mining town situated on a headland between two fjords. Through its ice-free port, the second largest in Norway, Sweden exports its ore from Kiruna by rail. Two trains run daily to Kiruna, the only way to reach this town, which is not connected to the Norwegian rail network. In Narvik, memories of war still linger. At the outbreak of the Second World War, the Germans occupied the town to supply their factories with iron. Fierce fighting, including the famous Battle of Narvik, virtually wiped the town off the map.
