Katarinahissen is visible from Södermalm, facing the crossroads that connects the island to Gamla Stan. It was built in 1881 to connect Slussen with the heights of Södermalm, which were difficult to reach on foot. The lift was fitted with an electric motor in 1915, but the old system was scrapped in 1933 and replaced with a new, more modern lift and footbridge. The view from the top of Katarinahissen is very interesting.

Getting around by metro

The Stockholm metro system (Tunnelbana, represented by a large blue T on a white background) is organized around three main lines (red, green and blue), all of which intersect at the central station, T-Centralen. Most people in the capital who use public transport use SL passes, which offer unlimited access to Tunnelbana, buses and Pendeltåg (SEK 970 per month). There are three types of buses: Blue buses that run direct and fast. Red 2-digit buses that run within Stockholm Kommun and have local routes. 3-digit red buses that serve the suburbs. On weekends, a night service allows you to go home at any time, even if the wait can be a little long.
