Lake Singkarak, less frequented than its counterpart Maninjau, is the second largest lake on the island of Sumatra, just after Lake Toba. It is home to the endemic Mystacoleuseus Padangensis fish. The road leading to the lake is a spectacular sight. At a distance of 14 km from Singkarak, don't miss a visit to the village of Sulit Air, with its magnificent 70-metre-long traditional houses. Although it's possible to stay here for several days, Singkarak is the only village with facilities for visitors. Heading north along the lake, we reach Pandangpanjang (see Bukittinggi).
