Bukittinggi literally means "high hill". Situated at an altitude of 900 meters, the hills on which this pretty little town is built give it a picturesque character. Bukittinggi is also known as "Kota Jam Gadang", the town of the big clock. It owes its name to a very famous building: a large tower topped by a clock dominates the market square. Bukittinggi is the cultural capital of the Minangkabau region and a major tourist attraction. Here, becaks have been replaced by horse-drawn carriages. Several staircases link the different floors of the town.
