Nestled in the valley between Merapi and Sago, another imposing 2,260-metre volcano, the small town of Batusangkar (20 km north of Pandang Panjang) was once the royal capital of Minangkabau country. Visitors can explore Fort Van Der Capellen, erected during the Padris War, as well as Fort Kock. Another major attraction is the Pagaruyung Palace (open daily from 8am to 6pm, at a cost of Rp 25,000), a must-see historical and cultural landmark, rebuilt after the fire that ravaged the Minangkabau royal palace in 1804. The architecture alone is worth the trip.
