A road and rail junction, Pandangpanjang lies 72 km north of Padang and 30 km from Bukittinggi. Don't miss the traditional dance performances at the ASKI conservatory (on the northern outskirts of town). At the station, ask for permission to ride the coal convoys down to Sichinchin. The days of steam engines are over, but the track is as spectacular as ever: the train winds through narrow valleys and over the Anai River torrent on Dutch iron bridges. It's one of the last trains in Sumatra, but the line is only used for mining.
