On the Makassar Strait, Palu is the capital of Sulawesi Tengah (the province of Central Sulawesi), with 360,000 inhabitants. It is the region's main port and gateway to the island of Borneo.Palu lies at the far end of the long, narrow gulf of the same name. A veritable equatorial fjord, the sea breeze that rushes in at midday every day is enough to allow you to breathe, but also sterilizes the surrounding hills. The weather in Palu is hot and dry. Cacti proliferate. But its dusty streets offer limited charm. A few rare examples of traditional houses can be seen. Indonesia was shaken in 2018 by a series of deadly earthquakes, and Palu was not spared. The region has since been recovering from its wounds.
