Even further east, about a 2-hour drive from Kudus, the coast is gradually being transformed into vast stretches of salt marshes reminiscent of the Mediterranean. Rembang and Lasem boast some fine Chinese temples. 88 km east of Lasem, the town of Tuban, mentioned in Chinese chronicles as early as the 11th century, was an important port for the kingdoms of the Brantas Valley. From its past, it retains an imposing Chinese temple, a mosque and the tomb of Sunan Bonang. Some 25 km to the west, the small town of Kerek offers beautiful batiks.
