Further east, 25 km from Demak, this town with its beautiful mosques and beautifully carved houses is also a place of pilgrimage. People come here to pay homage to Sunan Kudus, the town's founder. The mausoleum is adorned with a lace curtain that is changed on the occasion of "Buka Luwur", which coincides with Ashura. On this day, various historical and religious events are commemorated. But the main attraction (and in fact, almost the only one) is the kretek factory. Around 45,000 women roll these fragrant Indonesian cigarettes all day long. Kudus derives from the Arabic name "al-Quds", meaning "holy".
