LAKES NØRRESØ AND SØNDERSØ
Viborg's rural setting offers walks to discover the cathedral, its flora and fauna and its two lakes.
A dozen possible walks, between 5 and 20 km, to discover this rural environment. These walks allow you to have another point of view on Viborg, to admire the cathedral from the water and to see the fauna, the flora and the houses bordering the lakes. On a point of land at the junction of the two lakes, the Borgvold Park. Canoeing is an equally enjoyable option!
Two historic routes, 184 and 220 km long, pass through this area. The first one combines two old routes: Hærvejen and Trækstien. Hærvejen is known as the "ox road". It is a road with sections dating back more than 6,000 years. At that time, it was mainly used as a trade route, when oxen pulled the carts. You will still see parts of the old tracks, sheepfolds and fords. The route is very well marked, both on foot and by bicycle. Every year, the hiking event Hærvejsmarchen is held here. Trækstien is also centuries old and follows the old towpaths of the Gudenå River.
The second one leads from Viborg to Padborg, at the German border. Hærvejen in Old Norse means "the old road". Indeed, this central road leading from the north of Jutland to the south, almost in a straight line, was used by pilgrims who went to Compostela, Rome or Jerusalem. Moreover, shells have been found by archaeologists along the way. In 2008, 12 hostels were opened to accommodate these walkers, like in Lindely.
