Botanical garden in Copenhagen with over 15,000 plant species, a romantic lake and 27 greenhouses
10 hectares of greenery, nature and excess! Separated from Rosenborg Castle by the Øster Voldgade avenue, this botanical garden occupies a vast quadrilateral on the edge of the Østerbro district. It is part of the Museum of Natural History. Formerly the Hortus Medicus, created by charter in 1600, it was closely linked to the university, where medical plants were cultivated. It was moved to its present site in 1870, as the previous grounds were no longer large enough.
More than 15,000 species of plants, all identified of course, grow in this garden with its romantic lake! There are 27 greenhouses in all, including the Palmehuset, the "House of Palms". The most tropical varieties are protected in this extraordinary glass and metal structure built in 1874. The vegetation is particularly exotic when the cold and snowy days arrive! Inspired by London's famous Crystal Palace, it was financed by the patron Jacobson! 94 meters long, 16 meters high, made up of 4,000m2 of glass panels and a surface area of 3,000m2!
It features a beautiful rotunda and walkways overlooking the rainforest, virtually at the height of the palm and banana tree crowns (accessed via a spiral metal staircase). But the garden really comes into its own in summer, when the flower beds are transformed by the blossoms. What a chlorophyll-filled trip!
