The Morant Bay peninsula marks the extreme eastern tip of the island. It is a large swamp covered by a desolate mangrove vegetation crossed by only one road, dented and lost in this wild universe. The region is mostly visited for its lighthouse, which is located at the end of this road. This lighthouse, the oldest of the island, is classified as a national monument. It was assembled in 1841 by free Africans, from the Krou ethnic group (straddling Liberia and the Ivory Coast), to work in Jamaica after the emancipation of slaves. It consists of a cast iron tower of 30 m height, cast in London, decorated with red and white.
