Mwaro is a town nestled in the heart of the central Mugamba hills at 1 900 m above sea level. In the colonial era, it was an active trading centre where Asians and Greeks held shop, and an important administrative centre for the region. But after independence, Mwaro, encompassed in Muramvya province was like drowned, and it was only in favour of the re-creation of the province bearing its name in December 1998 that the locality returned to central. Its special status has not contributed to making it a very developed urban centre (one is not exceeding 10 000 inhabitants), but its geographical location, within the green hills of Burundi to productive agriculture and traditionally gifted for breeding, can be a ground for passage. The city of the same name, the agglomeration of Mwaro is actually located in the commune Kayokwe. It shares with Kibumbu a number of common infrastructures. A sanatorium, a hospital, schools, several missions and a private university (established in 2001) will thus throughout a rather active and potential area. We are, less here than elsewhere, in a region devastated by war, which feels in the very peaceful atmosphere of the corner.
