Located 36 km from Gitega by the RN 16 which leads south in Bururi, the town of Gishubi has long been famous for its extraordinary artisanal market. He brought together the largest producers of inkoko (small round baskets) and ibikemanyi (large baskets with conical covers decorated with geometric motifs, typical of southern Gitega). There were also many potières and blacksmiths, and practitioners offering their medicinal herbs…But the conflict was hard hit by this Sunday trading. Gishubi is a region that paid a heavy human and economic price to the civil war, having been the scene of fierce battles between the government army and CNDD-FDD rebels. Political tensions remained sensitive to them until the mid s, and even today the recovered peace has not borne fruit. The market brings together more producers and merchants than in previous years, but it no longer has its old splendour.
