In the southeast of the Shanga falls, the "German fault" is a spectacular slit of the relief in the escarpment which marks the separation of the central plateaus and the Dépression depression (two other flaws are adjacent but less impressive). From the Nyakazu plateau to about 1 950 m altitude, it opens a seductive view of this depression, more than 700 m below. Its edges and ravines retain a rich vegetation composed of precious mountain trees (Entandrophragma excelsum) and typical forest species in Brachystegia (ihwa). Animals inhabit the fault, among which are well represented on earth, green monkeys (Neglectus aethiops), and in the air, Alexander's starling (Onychognathus mourning). The site owes its name to the presence on the Nyakazu plateau at the beginning of the th century of a German military fort to control this eastern limit of the country. Remnants of this toxaphene remain close to loopholes, which it is difficult to detect without the guidance of the neighbours.
