A small village for a great cultural contribution! Seongeup was the capital of one of the 3 counties of the island between 1410 and 1914. It is surrounded by the remains of walls and there are a total of 312 traditional thatched houses, some of which are still inhabited (so don't be too noisy). At the exit of the north gate are dolharubang, the symbols of the island. They were to serve as protective deities but also as symbols of fertility. They have a singular phallic shape, both hands resting on the abdomen, protruding eyes and a wide nose. They wear a round hat and have their heads tucked into their shoulders. They all look rather gentlemanly and frankly friendly because they all have a big smile on their face. There are 45 in all on the island (we let you look for them all), but they are now reproduced by the thousands in all sizes for tourists, attesting to a trip to Jejudo. There are beautiful old protected trees in the village. This village is certainly more authentic than Pyoseon in the southeast, and one of our favorite sites in Jeju. There are minbaks for those who wish to stay there.
