Jindo Island is the country's third-largest island, and above all the most important in Jeolla-do province. It owes its fame to a natural phenomenon described by a French ambassador as the "Miracle of Moses". At low tide, a 3 km strip of land forms a path between the islands of Jindo and Modo. Every year, at the end of April or May, the Yeongdeungje festival highlights this event, and you can take part in this astonishing crossing. The island of Jindo is also famous for its spitz dog breed, the Jindogae, a faithful but somewhat feisty dog. Its strong character has opened doors to the ranks of both the army and the police. Since 1962, it has been a national treasure. The breed's origins are not certain, but it is said to have descended from animals imported by the Mongols around the year 900.Apart from the "Miracle of Moses", the island doesn't have much to offer. There are three beaches, Seomang, Geumkap and Gagye, but these are far from memorable. As far as history is concerned, only a few remains of fortresses are still visible, but nothing too exciting. Otherwise, you can visit the Ullimsanbong, which was the studio of the painter and calligrapher Heo Yu (also known as Sochi, 1809-1898) and representative of the Southern School or Suchaehwa.
