This island paradise lies 140 km from Mokpo. It bears the poetic nickname of "the red island" because of its color at sunset. For this reason, it has been declared a natural monument and tourist infrastructures are scarce. People come to Hongdo to enjoy its cliffs, forests and azure-blue sea. This small island lost in the Yellow Sea is famous for its strange rock formations rising from the waves. In this respect, it is reminiscent of Ulleungdo in the East Sea. There are yeogwans, minbaks and other seafood restaurants in the port of arrival. You can set off on an expedition to the island's other village. There's a small beach close to the harbor, but it's not the seaside pleasures that attract tourists to Hongdo, but rather the beautiful landscape. To get a good view of the island, you'll need to take one of the boats that circumnavigate it. You can also stop off on one of the two Heuksando islands (the large one, Dae, or the small one, So), which, like Hongdo, are rocky, but on which farming is possible because they are larger and flatter. There are also a few beaches where you can enjoy a lazy afternoon.
