MELLAH DISTRICT
Mellah district, home to 3 covered souks, including the clothing and fabric souk, the jewelry souk and the spice souk
As early as 1558, Marrakech's Jewish population was brought together in this 18-hectare district by order of the Saadian Sultan Moulay Abdallah, who was not one to joke about mixing populations and religions. Today, a small minority Jewish community still lives here in harmony with its Muslim neighbors. You can visit the Mellah's Laazama synagogue, dating from 1492, and its cemetery. Three covered souks are held in the Mellah: the spice souk, the fabric souk and the jewelry souk, where some 60 merchants work mainly with gold.
