Budget & Tips
Where to sleep in Marrakech is one of the major questions you ask yourself when planning your trip. There's a wide range of accommodation on offer, from small, simple hotels to large palaces (in the modern city) and the famous charming riads that guarantee a total change of scenery, not to mention all-inclusives outside the city or rustic ecolodges in the mountains. Don't forget that most riads are located in the medina. Depending on your activities, and especially if they take place at night, you'll need to walk to them. Room rates with Moroccan breakfast start at around €40, and go well over €300 for the most luxurious riads with swimming pools. Don't hesitate to compare accommodations according to your budget and location. For long-stay visitors, groups of friends or families, it's worth renting a riad in its entirety. Expect to pay around €70 per day for a small riad with 2 or 3 bedrooms. Rentals often come with a cleaning service, included or not, so don't hesitate to negotiate. As with everything else in Morocco!
To be booked
As a general rule, we recommend that you book your accommodation before you arrive, for greater peace of mind. Most riads have very few rooms and quickly fill up. Similarly, as many events take place in Marrakech throughout the year, hotels can be overrun with delegates at certain times (festivals, marathons, rallies, etc.). Come in winter, which corresponds to the low tourist season, and you'll benefit from advantageous rates. Beware, however, of the end-of-year festivities, which attract large numbers of Europeans eager to take advantage of the lively atmosphere and mild climate. It's essential to book your accommodation in advance to secure your place in the sun!
Tourist traps
The "rabatteurs" are easily recognizable: they offer independent travelers they quickly spot, good addresses, good deals, even their friendship, with the aim of earning commissions. Some of them operate right outside the airport, an ideal hunting ground for referring their "victims" to hotels that are not necessarily to be recommended, or to dirty derbs lost deep in the medina. Not only will it cost you more than the normal rate, but they'll never let you out of their sight. This leaves you open to scams and verbal aggression. For your own safety and peace of mind, we strongly advise you not to condone this kind of practice, as it is not only a nuisance for you, but also for tourism in Marrakech.
