What's very local
Ah, the art of haggling, that exotic-sounding tradition! In Morocco, debating an item is a national sport. What better way to understand the society, the culture or to adapt to the local way of life than to play the game. In the souks, there are three price brackets: the highest for foreign tourists, followed by MREs (Moroccans living abroad), also on vacation, and finally locals. To start with, you have to be a bit of a comedian: never show too much enthusiasm for one product, but pretend to pay attention to several. Then, unaware of the item's true value, it's best to let the merchant set the price first. Then propose your own, a price lower than your final estimated offer, so as to raise the stakes. This can be a lengthy discussion, depending on the interest in the item, but it should always be conducted with a smile, and with no obligation to buy.
Tourist traps
Counterfeiting in Morocco is estimated at several billion dirhams. It's very tempting and easy to buy accessories, copies of major French or Italian luxury brands, which are clearly visible when strolling through the medina. Buying counterfeit items (fake handbags, watches, perfumes, etc.) is forbidden. Be aware that passing through customs can result in fines (sometimes up to twice the value of the genuine article) and confiscation of the item. At your own risk!
