MENARA GARDENS
We all know this beautiful image of a pavilion reflected in a pool, with the snowy peaks of the Atlas Mountains in the background.
With its majestic basin, this 100-hectare garden is ideal for a romantic stroll at the end of the day, and is undoubtedly one of the most visited gardens in Marrakech, along with the Agdal. There are many legends about the history of the Menara basin: it is said to be the place where the Almoravid Abou Bekr, founder of the city, buried the booty he had amassed during his campaigns, or even a vast cemetery where the bones of the mistresses of Sultan Moulay Ismaïl lie. In practical terms, the basin's original function was to store rain and mountain water and irrigate crops and olive groves. Today, the basin, with a surface area of around 200 m, continues to fill thanks to an ancient hydraulic system. Its waters reflect the elegant Menara pavilion, built by the Saadians in 1866 as their residence. Its pyramid-shaped green roof, reflected in the waters with the snow-capped Atlas Mountains in winter in the background, is a picture postcard image, arguably the city's most beautiful. Nowadays, in addition to amateur photographers and tourists, it's a favorite spot for families who come for weekend picnics in the shade of the olive trees, as well as lovers who can enjoy a moment of peace alone away from the hustle and bustle of the city. They can sometimes be seen throwing bread to the carp that live in the lake. At the entrance to the pond, you'll find a number of small stalls where you can quench your thirst or relax with a cup of tea.
