BAB AYLEN
Historic doorway in Marrakech, featuring an angled design and retaining its original appearance
Named after an extinct Berber tribe, this gateway is a typical example of the elbow gate that has retained its original appearance. It has no particular architectural features, but it does mark an important historical episode: it was here that the Almohads suffered a bloody defeat in 1129 when they first attempted to seize the town. Once through the gate, you can see the small mosque of Imam Qadi Ayyad, one of the city's seven saints. It's also the entrance to an authentic district teeming with riads.
