KOUBBA EL-BA'ADIYNE
Unique vestige of the Almoravid epic with terrace, featuring sides pierced by 5 horseshoe arches topped by lobed arches
The El-Ba'Adiyne koubba, restored by archaeologists in 1948, is the only vestige of the Almoravid epic. It's a 12th-century cupola, whose foundations are lower than street level. You have to descend into a pit to discover the building, which houses a stone ablutions basin. The sides of the dome are pierced by five horseshoe arches topped by lobed arches. A terrace flanked by a balustrade supports the dome, decorated with chevrons in relief and arcatures interlaced around a seven-pointed star.
