BAB DOUKKALA MOSQUE
Bab Doukkala mosque, with its Koranic school and hammam, the only vestige of the many constructions undertaken in the area
Built in 1558 by the mother of Sultan Ahmed el-Mansour (the builder, among other works, of the Saadian Tombs), this mosque is the only vestige of the numerous constructions decreed by the mother of the Golden One. Lalla Messaouda, protector of the arts and literature and a passionate lover of architecture, undertook the construction of numerous fondouks in the northern part of the medina, which have now disappeared. A Koranic school and a hammam were added to the mosque, opposite the Sidi el-Hassan fountain, named after one of the artists she patronized.
