THEATER DES WESTENS
Read moreThe Theater des Westens (Theater des Westens) is a beautiful example of Wilhelmian architecture, imposing and opulent. Built in 1896 by the architect Bernhard Sehring to host operetta performances, it also hosted Josephine Baker in the 1920s and Maria Callas in the 1950s. Carefully restored on the eve of Berlin's 750th anniversary, the Theater des Westens is now renowned for its great musicals (The Lion King, Mamma mia...). But be aware that the musicals are presented in German.
BAR JEDER VERNUNFT
Read moreThe place is enchanting: a big top with mirror-covered interior walls that hosts the city's best entertainers . The place has something of the glamour of the 1920s, enough to make you forget the discomfort of the tables. The program includes cabarets, circus, songs, etc. The pun in the name may have escaped you: bar is also an old word for "without" and vernunft is the reason. So it could be translated as "without any seriousness".
From the same managers: the Tipi am Kanzleramt, as the name suggests, next to the chancellery.
ADMIRALSPALAST
Read moreIn the 1920s, this mythical Berlin venue was home to magazines, operettas, thermal baths, variety shows, etc. Today, this splendid building has revived its tradition of entertainment and houses a theatre where a variety of shows are programmed all year round. It is also the scene of a founding event for the (future) GDR. It was here in April 1946 that the famous handshake between Wilhelm Pieck and Otto Grotewohl took place, sealing the merger of the KPD and the left wing of the SPD to create the SED (Socialist United Party of Germany).
MASTUL
Read moreIt's another one of those typically Berlin hybrid venues that we just can't categorize! This minibar, part cultural center, part concert venue and part exhibition hall, smacks of alternative Berlin. If you can take a look at the program on the website, do so, so that you know what to expect: acoustic concert, play or novel reading... or just let yourself be surprised. The aim of the association that runs the place is to revitalize the area, and it's doing so with ease.

ZUKUNFT AM OSTKREUZ
Read moreOnce in Ostkreuz, one tends to follow the crowd to the streets full of bars in the neighbourhood. How about swimming against the current for a change? Head for the Markgrafendamm where you will find the Zukunkt ("future" in German), an interesting concept combining bar, cinema, theatre and concert, just that! Here you can enjoy a drink with friends with your feet in the sand or attend one of the many art performances. When the weather is nice, there is also the open-air cinema Pompeji and small festivals.
QUASIMODO
Read moreSince 1975, Quasimodo has been a true institution. Very sunny, its terrace attracts the whole neighbourhood until late at night and, when the weather is not suitable, the large glass room takes over. In short, it's not just a café, it's a meeting place and a transit point to the jazz club or the adjoining cinema. In a cinephile atmosphere and imbued with blues, between Keith Haring's posters, Berliners indulge in their favourite occupation: drinking beer or Weinschorle, while remaking the world!
BADEHAUS
Read moreRun by the same team as the renowned Szimpla Kert in Budapest, this concert hall in a RAW-Gelände orange-brick building has something to charm the young and not-so-young of the neighbourhood with its extraordinary décor: large stage, coffee tables and secret garden. A very eclectic programme with numerous hip-hop jam sessions, rock concerts of all kinds, film screenings, dance classes and acoustic concerts. The Badehaus has smoking and non-smoking rooms to suit everyone.
