What costs extra

Asking for a pitcher of water in restaurants is frowned upon and sometimes even refused. It is customary in Germany to buy a bottle of water (often sparkling). You will also find that water is sometimes more expensive than beer.

Remember that restaurants often refuse credit cards. Carry cash with you and remember that it is customary to tip about 10% of the price by rounding up. Not tipping can be interpreted as dissatisfaction with the service.

The local way

April is the beginning of the asparagus(Spargelzeit) season and you should see it everywhere, in the markets and on the daily specials. The sandy soil of Brandenburg makes it suitable for the production of this vegetable plant. The municipality of Beelitz, south-west of Berlin, is particularly well known for growing asparagus.

Then, in May, you'll see strawberry stands all over town... in the shape of strawberries!

As for the famous Berlin Currywurst , we are forced to mention here that its paternity is disputed in Germany. Between Hamburg and Berlin, no DNA test will ever be able to determine with certainty the origin of this strange sausage with its curry sauce. Very popular with tourists, it has become a symbol of the city.
