Here, Christmas is experienced as a magical open-air stroll. And why is that? Because it's impossible to stay at just one market, as there are so many Christmas markets in Cologne. To be more precise, there are twelve of them! So we decided to explore them all, at our own pace, to the delight of the smells of local specialities and the glittering tinsel.

Immerse yourself in the magic of Christmas in Cologne by booking this guided bike tour. Discover Cologne Cathedral, the Christmas markets, the city centre and much more.

Our 5 favourite Christmas markets in Cologne

Our first stop? The cathedral market. It sits proudly at the foot of the imposing Gothic cathedral, a must-see in Cologne. Beneath its illuminated arches, more than 150 chalets overflow with sweet treats and local crafts. We sampled a melting gingerbread while looking up at the giant fir tree overlooking the square. A lovely souvenir!

A few steps further on, we came across the Heinzelmännchen market, the famous Cologne elves! The atmosphere was cheerful, almost mischievous... Much to the delight of the children, who slid around on the ice rink while the older ones tried their hand at curling.

We then made our way through the city to Neumarkt, where the Angels' Market sparkles. Here, everything seems a little sweeter: hundreds of hanging stars, angels wandering around, and a surprising Christmas cocktail bar. A real favourite! Then, on Rudolfplatz, the St Nicholas Village takes us back to childhood. There are workshops for the little ones, shows and even a giant Advent calendar. Finally, we head to the harbour market on the banks of the Rhine. Here, it's above all the romantic setting that adds a touch of charm.

Good to know: the Musée du Chocolat is right next door to the marché du Port. Of course, as gourmets, we took advantage of our time in the area to visit this delicious museum!

Getting to Cologne at Christmas is a trip in itself! But to prepare for your visit to the Cologne Christmas Market, you need to choose the best means of transport.

From Paris, the most convenient is the ICE train: allow around 3 hours 15 minutes from Gare du Nord to get directly to the heart of the city, just a stone's throw from the markets. By car, allow around 5 hours 30 minutes via Brussels and Liège.

From Marseille, the journey is longer: almost 10 hours. So it's best to opt for a direct flight to Düsseldorf or Cologne/Bonn, followed by a short train transfer (30 minutes).

Finally, from Bordeaux, it's a 10-hour drive or an 8-hour train journey with a connection in Paris. Here again, flying is the best option.

Whichever option you choose, arrival at the central station, facing the illuminated cathedral, immediately sets the tone: the magic of Christmas is about to begin!

Preparing for your visit to the Cologne Christmas market: where to park?

If you're coming by car, the good news is that Cologne is well equipped to welcome Christmas visitors! There are several underground car parks in the immediate vicinity of the markets, notably around the cathedral("Dom" or "Am Gürzenich" car parks) and the elf market on Alter Markt. The chalets can be reached on foot in just a few minutes.

At weekends in December, however, traffic can become heavy in the historic centre. It's best to use the park-and-ride sites on the outskirts, accessible by tram or metro.
