A westphalian city of the northern borders of North Rhine-Wesphalie, 278 000 inhabitants, 63% of whom are Catholics (in a very Protestant region), Münster is above all a university city: 55 000 students and the highest concentration of bicycles in Germany. One in two Münsterois is said to be moving on two wheels… And Münster is the only German city to have a bicycle service for bicycles! During the Second World War, more than 100 bombings caused the destruction of 92% of the historic centre and 67% of the entire city. Inevitably, the historical stamp has disappeared. However, Münster is still beautiful and is still an enchanting city, very nice, green, living and imbued with a relaxed atmosphere. It still has some very beautiful monuments reconstructed to the same after the apocalypse, and reserves very interesting visits.HistoryMünster was elevated to the rank of bishopric in 792 by Charlemagne. In the th and th centuries, the city underwent a real commercial boom that lasted over the next two centuries. From 1532 onwards, it followed the reform movement and became, in 1934-35, the spiritual centre of the anabaptist, a radical Protestant current. However, the ensuing massacre prevented Protestantism from imposing itself in that region. During the th century, the Jesuits participated in the success of the Counter-Reformation. The peace negotiations between 1643 and 1648 were held in Münster, which, ending the Thirty Years War, led to the Signing of the Treaty of Westphalia. The city was connected to the th century in Prussia, remaining the cultural and administrative centre of the Province of Westphalia.
