Nestled between the coastline and the Chaîne chain, it is the capital of the Golan, a university town, an important tourist centre and, thanks to the presence of the port of Bandar-e Anzali, a commercial hub between Iran, the Caucasus and Russia. If Rasht (650 000 inhabitants) is a strategic base camp to take advantage of the region's attractions, the city itself has little tourist interest, outside a small museum dedicated to archaeology.
