Ras means cape in Swahili, and is found as an adjective in front of each point of the islands of the Zanzibar archipelago. Ras Kisimani is the most south-westerly point of Mafia, closest to the Tanzanian mainland. In the middle of the Mafia Channel, the small island of Bwejuu lies halfway between the two shores. The wild beach is absolutely magnificent. Everything is preserved in this environment. A mosque once stood here, built in the 12th century by the Shirazian Persians who lived here. Now in ruins, the mihrab remains, remarkably well preserved. An opportunity to take a stroll around this little-visited tip of the island.
