Already in 1854, Canadians were coming to these lands for their abundant timber resources. In 1903, twenty-two people founded the small community of Grand Marais, which today retains a rustic and wild appearance. It has a population of about 1,300 people year round, much more in good weather. We stay here for the quietness of the lake, the artists' galleries, the numerous sports activities, the wide open spaces... There is no shortage of hotels and restaurants. From this village starts the legendary Gunflint Trail, a more than 100 km-long dirt road that leads through wide open spaces to the entrance of the Boundary Waters Park, a wilderness area to be discovered by canoe.
