A surprisingly sophisticated and modern city, Minneapolis stands in stark contrast to the surrounding countryside. Its industrial architecture of warehouses and brick buildings gives it a slightly rugged air, echoing its natural surroundings. You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants and cafés, and Minneapolis' reputation for nightlife is well established. The city's dynamic culture and arts scene saw the rebirth in 2006 of the Guthrie Theater, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. Minneapolis may not be a city of great beauty, but it's easy to fall under its spell as you stroll along one of its 22 lakes or listen to the roar of the Mississippi rushing under its metal bridges.

Since the death of George Floyd in May 2020, the city has also been the scene of a worldwide movement against police violence. The crossroads of his death, now renamed George Floyd Square, is a place of recollection and remembrance.
