Sault (pronounced "Sou") Ste. Marie (known as "The Soo") is a small town with little more than a French name and history (French missionaries founded it in 1669). The bridge that connects it to its American sister city in the state of Michigan separates Lake Superior from Lake Huron and sees large cargo ships pass through. Its locks have made the city prosper and have become a historic site. This river activity explains the relative affluence of Sault Ste. Marie, crossed by Queen Street where shops and restaurants line up in red brick, and where the old Ermatinger house (1814) in grey stone dominates.
