Canadian designed and built canal, which was the longest lock in the world and the first to be powered by electricity.
Completed in 1895, the canal was the last link in an all-Canadian navigation system stretching from the St. Lawrence River to Lake Superior. Designed and built by Canadians, the canal incorporated several technical innovations. It was the longest lock in the world and the first to be powered by electricity. In addition, an emergency swing dam protected the lock in the event of an accident. The plant produced electricity on site. The new lock dates from 1998.
