It faces its Canadian namesake, the two cities being separated by the St. Marys River and the Soo Locks. Formerly the territory of the Ojibwe, the largest Amerindian nation in North America, it then passed into the hands of the French and then the English before being attached to the United States following the War of 1812. Nowadays, it is an important shipping route, the busiest in the world in terms of tonnage. There are many points of interest related to the maritime world and the region's historical and colonial past. In winter, snowmobile enthusiasts gather at the International 500 Snowmobile Race.
