Stretching from Lake Ontario to just north of Highway 407, just east of Toronto, Whitby is part of the Regional Municipality of Durham, of which it is the county seat. Named after its British namesake in Yorkshire, the township was founded in 1792 but it was not until 1855 that the southern portion of the township was incorporated as a city. Then in 1968, the town and the township merged. A little anecdote: it was here that Sir William Stephenson set up Camp X during the Second World War, a place entirely dedicated to the training of spies. The camp has disappeared but a monument testifies to its presence.
