Even today, Maniwaki is inhabited by the region's original inhabitants, the Algonquins. To the south of the city, they live on the Kitigan Zibi reserve. Founded in 1849, Maniwaki (Terre de Marie, in Algonquin) has always been a symbol of harmonious cohabitation between the French, Irish and Aboriginals. Over time, the town has become the most important administrative center in the Gatineau Valley region. Rich in heritage buildings, exciting activities and infrastructures dedicated to the memory of its forestry workers, including the Parc des Draveurs, Maniwaki today thrives on tourism.
