Even today, Maniwaki is inhabited by the region's original inhabitants, the Algonquins. To the south of the city, they live on the Kitigan Zibi reserve. Founded in 1849, Maniwaki (Terre de Marie, in Algonquin) has always been a symbol of harmonious cohabitation between the French, Irish and Aboriginals.
