Built on both sides of the Saint John River, the provincial capital was founded by the Acadians in 1732. They named their town Sainte-Anne-des-Pays-Bas. At the time of the deportation of the Acadians (mid-18th century), the English burned the town. It was rebuilt by the Loyalists who took over the site in 1783, and designated the new town as the capital of the province in 1785. Today, it is a city of just over 60,000 inhabitants known for its elegant Victorian homes hidden in the greenery. Among its attractions, the Historic Garrison District is not to be missed.
