The fourth largest city in Alberta, with a population of over 100,000, Red Deer is located halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. Walking through Heritage Square, you can see the Stevenson-Hall Block, the oldest building in Red Deer, and a Norwegian tree farm that traces the life of the communities that settled there in the 19th century. West of the centre, Waskasoo Park offers a great escape along the Red Deer River. The park is 11 km long, with 75 km of trails for walking and cycling in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter. Animal lovers will enjoy visiting the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary, home to 128 species of birds and 25 species of mammals.
