Legend has it that the town was named after a Cree medicine man who deserted during a battle with the Blackfoot tribe and lost his feathered headdress, resulting in the massacre of his people. Located in southeastern Alberta, Medicine Hat is a wooded oasis in the middle of the prairies that owes much of its prosperity to gas development (one of the largest natural gas fields in Western Canada). Pottery and earthenware are world famous (rich clay deposits abound on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River). In July, its stampede is the second largest rodeo in Alberta after Calgary's.
