On the national road and inside of the land, Lemonade has little interest for the visitor. Go instead to his coastal counterpart: Lemonade Mer and its beach. History tells us that Christopher Columbus and his men built Fort Navidad - the Nativity Fort - on their first voyage. Its ruins have not been precisely localized. Following the shipwreck of the Caravelle Santa María on 24 December 1492 between Cap-Haïtien and Caracol, Columbus was forced to let dozens of men on site. He goes back to La Niña and will return home almost a year later. He will restore the fort. His men died of illness and, above all, tendues tendues by the Taino in retaliation for abuses committed by this brutal handful of men.
