Puerto del Hambre and its fort Bulnes are located about 60 km south of Punta Arenas. They have become historical sites and played a key role in the history of colonization, as it was here that the first settlement in the region was established. Puerto del Hambre is located on the banks of Bahia Buena. It was here in 1584 that Captain Sarmiento de Gamboa founded the town of Rey Don Felipe. This first settlement met a tragic end: all its inhabitants died of hunger. The place was named Puerto del Hambre ("Port Famine") by the English privateer Thomas Cavendish, who discovered the remains of the colony years later
