14 km from Alleppey, Ambalappuzha is famous for housing one of the state's most important temples, the Sree Krishna temple, associated with the Guruvayoor temple. Its architecture is typical of Kerala. Its main festivities are celebrated in March and April. The temple is well known for its payasam, an exceptionally sweet milk porridge, prepared in large quantities and offered to the deity, as well as to visitors, during the festive season. The 16th-century poet Kunjan Nambiar staged his first Ottam Thullal, a solo dance performance with high social content, in the temple auditorium.
