12 km from Alappuzha, Punnapra is a village that belongs to history for having been the scene of a heroic battle between the communists and the Travancore State Police during the Punnapra Vayalar communist uprising in 1946. These areas are wonders of Kerala's ingenuity and technical and agricultural know-how and remind the visitor of the famous dykes of the Netherlands. Here, vast tracts of land have been reclaimed from the marshes and protected by dykes. Cultivation and housing were thus made possible well below sea level. A quiet cruise along these canals is a memorable experience.
